Unvarnished Hardwood Floor Cleaning Tips

Wood floors add class and beauty to any home. When properly maintained, the wood in your home can last generations. To maintain your floors, there are some special tips to follow, especially when your hardwood floor is unvarnished. Heavens Best offers regular hardwood floor maintenance plans, but there are still steps you can take to keep your unvarnished wood looking spectacular in between visits.

None of these remedies require expensive solvents or complicated steps, and most of the ingredients can already be found in your cleaning cabinet. When you add a little effort, your wood will be clean and shiny in a short period of time.

Unvarnished Hardwood Floor Care

1- Sweep the floor with a non-abrasive wood floor broom. Remove all visible dirt and get those hard to reach spots with a simple cloth.

2- Make a simple wood floor solution;

  • 3 ½ liters of regular tap water

  • 3 tablespoons of pure olive oil

  • 1 ½ tablespoon of unscented liquid detergent

  • ¼ cup of baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon of vinegar

3- Use an absorbent sponge to apply the mixture to your unvarnished wood floors. Rub gently along the grain. Make sure you don't water the floor or it can result in damage. Avoid using rough sponges, but using one with gentle bristles for hard to clean areas is ok.

4- Use a dry cloth or dry wood mop to clean the soiled solution from the floor. Make sure to remove all areas of pooled water. Let air dry for 20 minutes.

5- If your floors need extra conditioning, you can rub them down with a simple solution of one liter of warm water and four tablespoons of olive oil. Assure that you dry the floors after conditioning.

6- To polish your unvarnished hardwood floors while giving an added bit of protection, squeeze five fresh lemons and add three tablespoons of olive oil. Polish your floor with this mixture and allow time for drying; not only will the floor shine, but it will also leave a pleasant smell in your home.

Using these tips for unvarnished hardwood floors twice per month will keep your floors in immaculate shape and help them last for generations to come.
